Luke: Part 4 – The Magnificat
All Christians recognize the beauty and wonder of the young woman, called Mary. She is a remarkable woman, endowed with the grace of God for the great calling of bearing and giving birth to the child who will be the Saviour of the world. She deserves respect and honour for her willingness to take on this great calling. All generations do indeed call her blessed. But it is important that while acknowledging her blessedness, we don’t lose the plot. She is not our mediator, and she is not the co-redeemer alongside Jesus Christ. She is a lowly servant whom God blessed with this great and holy task. Indeed, the Magnificat, her great song of praise, begins with praise to God and rejoicing in Jesus Christ, her Saviour: “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!” Mary preaches to us about our great salvation and the fulfillment of God’s promise to save His people.
